ALTUZARRA

Joseph Altuzarra is a hot and dynamic young designer that is at the center of forging American fashion forward. Carine Roitfeld helped put him on the map in 2009 when she wore his coat to Paris Fashion Week.

I find his value of humility over self promotion refreshing in this day and age. I also respect that he forged his own path without going to design school. I look forward to Joseph Altuzara's contributions in years to come.

My inspiration was simple, glamorous and very American. Doing a photo shoot with consignment is very different from a regular shoot where you call in exactly what you want from many sources. I worked with what we had that day in a size 2 that said holiday to me.

Light

One of the reasons I am a good stylist is that I can see through all the noise and pair things down to the very best for my clients. It is an ability to see through all the trends, all the merchandise in stores and simplify for my clients. I also travel very light--extremely light -- so much so that people are shocked. Therefore my clients also love my help when they travel.

Anyway I came across this wonderful inspiration on my Yogi teabag today. Love the idea that if one travels and lives light, they could spread the light and be the light. Wonderful thought.

The RealReal in Rome

Jean Larette (on the right), a San Francisco interior designer, was in Rome on her way back from Barcelona for a bit of antique shopping. Her favorite way to tour Rome is on the back of a scooter zipping through traffic on cobblestone streets searching for the best gelato which is when she spotted the Real Real and hopped off to take a a photo.

We love it as it adds a certain gravitas to our modern online business.

NY Fashion Week continues to thrive

After returning from Fashion Week yesterday, I got into the office and Crain's NY Business called to interview me. I answered a number of questions about trends, etc. and told them I was happy fashion week was alive and well. They asked me if that was strange given the state of the economy. I said, yes perhaps from the outside looking in it must seem very extravagant. That said, I am a stylist by trade and I make women look good so that they feel good. Fashion Week fuels the economy and if it helps us feel good through this time, then I don't think that is bad.

I first met Jesse Garza when we were seated next to each other at a J.Mendel fashion show and we connected, both being stylists. What a lovely person and a real talent. When you visit his Visual Therapy offices in New York, you can't think of a better location, Fifth Avenue and 57th Street across from Bergdorf Goodman. We launched our internet shopping site for designer resale today. The RealReal was built over a number of months by myself, my partner and our Director of Merchandising. Pretty amazing what three women can do when they put their heads together.

Behind the Scenes

Now that TheRealReal has gone up for membership, it has given me a chance to look back.

After Easter I did an editorial type photo shoot for the opening pages of the site using the consigned goods that we had at that point. Challenging since we did not have a whole lot in model size. See photo below with a Nina Ricci jacket and Giambatistta Valli skirt.

Julie and I decided to use vintage Rootstein mannequins to wear clothes on the site. Adel Rootstein & Co. started in the early 1960's when Britain was beginning to influence the world of fashion. Mary Quant and Jean Muir were symbols of the new movement.

Our mannequin, Susan Hampshire, doesn't wear everything well so I did some styling of certain items on Rati our Director of Merchandising. The Chanel sweater jacket on the right looked a bit boring until we paired it with a Margiela polka-dot tulle top. The Piazza Sempione jacket on the left was certainly zipped up with Margiela. Hooray for Martin Margiela.

Starting a new business

I have been out of touch because I've been crazy busy with an internet startup. It is so exciting!! First off, I met my fabulous new business partner about four months ago. Thom Browne meets House of Lavande

While in Palm Beach, I went to the House of Lavande to meet Tracy Smith, the proprietress. It was Good Friday and things got a little crazy for Tracy but was not a problem cause I was knee deep in very well curated vintage costume jewelry. I then decided to dress up my Thom Browne ensemble. Not sure what Thom would say about that but we don't have to tell him. I think it's fabulous red, white and blue. And guess what? There are drawers and drawers for each color and category!

Ode to El Morocco

The San Francisco Fine Arts Museums MidWinter Gala channeled the legendary 1930's-1950's New York nightclub, El Morocco, with zebra stripes and banquettes that were its trademark in photos. Red always looks great with black & white of which Vanessa Getty was readily aware. Katie Traina also used red with great impact on her lips.

San Francisco may not be known for street style but we have great party style. The following photos are just a glimpse.

It's March and all the spring fashion issues are out. I was delighted to read Jennifer Hale's letter (click on image to enlarge) in one of my favorites- C Magazine. After having a personal styling business for eight years it was nice to read a magazine founder's words about her real world vision on style. It seems some fashion magazines think that with their glamourous coverage, women across America should be able to be effortlessly chic. Thank you Jennifer for acknowledging the effort it takes to translate those glossy pages into people's real lives.

Fashion Week stories

One thing I love about the New York fashion world, now that I live in San Francisco are surreptitious reunions with old friends at Fashion Week. I requested a ticket for the Araks show that I heard was a good up and coming designer. Walked in and ran into Jenna Lyons, J. Crew guru, who I hadn't seen in a couple of years. She looked great as always wearing a Celine coat. Jenna told me that Araks Yeramyan had worked for her at J. Crew, maybe that's why this newcomers collection was well edited and fresh.

New York Fashion Week Fall 2011

Five days and 20 shows later, the San Francisco Chronicle asked me for my personal fave. Derek Lam, Thom Browne, and Carolina Herrera were the best of those I saw. Mrs. Herrera knows how to give a good show, and has been doing so for many years. Her show was my favorite, not only because it was slightly paired down and fresh, but because it was the best of hers I have ever seen.

Coincidently, Mrs. Herrera will be presenting her collection in San Francisco at Davies Symphony Hall. An Evening with Carolina Herrera sponsored by Neiman Marcus will take place on April 20th to honor the 100th year Anniversary of the San Francisco Symphony.

1. Don't buy something because you love it on someone else or see it in a magazine. It could look good on you but not necessarily.

2. When deciding on a purchase, ask an honest friend with a good eye. Do not be swayed by enthusiastic salespeople.

BALENCIAGA exhibition comes to San Francisco

Balenciaga and Spain opens March 26 at the de Young Museum and will surely be an important and sensational exhibit for San Francisco. Interesting to me is that Cristobal Balenciaga's hallmark was kindness and extreme courtesy. He was a Spaniard whose work was enormously influenced by his country even after he moved to France. Balenciaga arrived in Paris in 1937 and was soon revolutionizing fashion. His business soared in the war years. Even with Dior's entrance in 1947, neither Balenciaga's popularity nor fame dimmed. Christian Dior liked to call Balenciaga 'the master of us all'. His collections were praised for their overwhelming sense of luxury and beauty.

The exhibition, curated by Hamish Bowles, will be presented in six groups: Spanish Art, Dance, Bullfighting, Religious Life, The Spanish Court and Religious Dress.

On March 24, a fundraising gala will be held to celebrate the opening of the exhibition with the curator Hamish Bowles, European editor at large for Vogue. The gala will attract glitterati of the national and international fashion worlds paying tribute to the great master couturier.

She doesn't like handbags

Carine Roitfeld has announced today that she will be leaving French Vogue. The fashion world is all a twitter, no pun intended. She says she is really a stylist at the core and never imagined herself in an editor in chief role. Not that she hasn't enjoyed it but she doesn't really like the business part. Sometimes when she goes to shows, she feels she is being sold handbags. She doesn't even like them. She thinks they ruin a look.

Jennifer Siebel Newsom heads to Sundance

After working non-stop for two years on a documentary to support her message of empowering women, MissRepresentation has been accepted into the competition at the Sundance Film Festival. I have seen many iterations of trailers since 2008 and can't wait to see the whole thing. I am inspired by Jennifer and hope there will be a whole new crop of female role models like her who are engaged, kind and trying to make a difference.

Words can't describe the thankfulness I have for what is a stone's throw from my home

In a few short days it will be time to give thanks for all that we have. I recommend being grateful everyday but we have a national holiday that we set aside once year where we do it all together. When we are a children, it is time away from school and lots of fun. As an adult, I am thankful for our country, our beautiful city, friends and family. Being (with) John Malkovich

I asked my friends to meet me at Church. They thought twice about that, until I explained that Church Los Angeles is the latest, coolest boutique. John Malkovich was presenting his menswear line called Technobohemian. The clothes are expertly crafted and John is a real textile connoisseur. He can rattle off the mills of each and every fabric he uses in the line.

Church has been open less than a year and has quickly become the destination for cool, outrageous and all local L.A. designs.

C is for California style

I don't know about you but I am in love with C magazine. As a former New Yorker, I can say that C rivals any Condé Nast or Hearst publication and we know how long those guys have been around.

Down in LA to work with our lovely First Lady. My first destination was Decades, hoping to find something for the Symphony Opening. Arrived a little early for our appointment to catch up with Cameron Silver, the dashing proprietor, and found out her flight was two hours late. At this point, I told Cameron it was not going to happen.

Next day after some campaigning with the Mayor, she met me at Decades. To my surprise and utter delight, we found a vintage I. Magnin dress (the iconic San Francisco retailer), designed by Teal Traina in the 60′s! Could there be a better dress for the First Lady of San Francisco to wear to the Symphony Opening? I think not.

Catching up with Cameron

First stop in LA last week was Decades. Unfortunately, my client missed our appointment because her flight was delayed, giving me the pleasure of catching up with CS.

Cameron was as full of stories as the last time, and looking just as chic. Victoria Beckham was in after me and wanted the dress I had pulled, etc, etc. He thinks he has too many clothes in his closet but can't get rid of them hoping they might be worth something someday. “Of course they will!” I exclaim.

And what is new with this very successful vintage storeowner? Cameron is taking ballet lessons. He wants the body of a ballet dancer and is well on his way as he wears clothes extremely well. I love that Cameron is doing something slightly outside the box. Not the first time and probably not the last.

A Premiere Look

Jennifer Siebel Newsom did a short film called The Butler's in Love with director David Arquette that premiered in Los Angeles last week. In preparation, we put together a look from her existing wardrobe. The dark indigo denim Colleen Quen dress was purchased two years ago and suddenly looked new again. Very clean and minimalist in a Phoebe Philo sort of way. The dramatic collar needed no other accessories but a beige pair of Marc Jacobs sandals with nails and toes in the same color.

Style and trends in Paris

As I mentioned in an earlier post, Paris was awash in a sea of converse sneakers. I can't leave it at that so had to share a few other stylish Parisians.

The children in Paris are probably the chicest. These sisters were attending the fantastical Les Lalanne sculpture exhibit at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs.

These young men I found on the street, definitely not homeless.

This shop girl was taking a cigarette break in white pants and boots which might seem counterintuitive to some but gives the look gravitational pull.

Lastly, I saw a lot of women not just showing their brassiere straps, as was a la mode for years but the entire back as this young lady did at Mama Shelter, a Philippe Starck designed hotel and restaurant. Which was, by the way, fabulous.

Prayer Chic

Dana Corsello's essence caught me when I met her a year ago through a dear friend of my brother's. She had just come to San Francisco to be the rector of St. Luke's Episcopal church. Dana's ebullience is so strong, she glows. Her husband wrote a lovely article about her in the August issue of Oprah Magazine. Whenever I see Dana, she is wearing her collar with some fun boots or shoes. Love it.

Let's go to Jonak (70, rue de Rennes) for an inexpensive fun pair of shoes. No one wants to buy designer clothing and shoes that are more in Paris than at home. Not all the shoes at Jonak are fabulous but you are bound to find something you love that no one will have at home.

Next stop is French designer, Vanessa Bruno (3, rue de Fleures) who is sold in America but there are no freestanding stores. We must see all that is Vanessa and pick up a trendy canvas cabas tote with sequined handles. Comes in many color combinations. We might even see Charlotte Gainsbourg there.

Isn't buying lingerie in Paris de rigueur? PRINCESSE tam tam is next (2, rue Guichard). There is a certain je ne ie sais quoi about this little shop, maybe it's the magic of naming your store after a Josephine Baker movie. I love everything... the designs, the simplicity, the sales help and the name is beyond.

There are so many shops in the 6th that you will all go off on your merry ways but before you do … another amazing place for a bargain is City Pharma (26, rue du Four). Stock up on your favorite French and European brands like Weleda, Biotherm, Roc, Caudalie, Phyto, Vichy and Bioderma. I bought some LaRoche-Posay sunscreen for $12. Practically worth the airfare!

Where I got my Style

This week an adorable young woman asked me this very question and it made me think. I am not sure there is one explanation of where style comes from. My mother didn't have extraordinary style that I know of, but she died when I was young. My maternal grandmother had a style but I am not sure I liked it. I never really thought of it before but my father had style. He wore seersucker, white bucks and all the sartorial elements of classical style with some flair. He started a hat collection in high school and continued it even though hats sort of went out with JFK.

So it is a Happy Fathers Day today to my father, who was quite an individual thinker, which is part of real style.

People have asked me for years whether high fashion designers would embrace the green movement. It has been slow but I am happy to hear that Gucci will start using recyclable packaging and will continue to seek alternative fiber options to include biodegradable packaging. This is a HUGE step and one that I hope others will follow.

The Americanization of Paris

Parisians have slowly adopted American fashion. It started more than 20 years ago with Ralph Lauren and when I visited the newly opened store on Saint Germain I noted they are the only store in Europe other than London to have RRL, Ralph's cowboy inspired line. I can't believe how many Converse sneakers I saw in Paris. I would say the mood is much more casual. Paris now has American Apparel, The Gap, Nike and Abercrombie & Fitch.

I chose Pauline (above) to represent the Parisian Converse craze. I think more Parisians than Americans wear Converse. Anyway, I discussed this phenomenon with Pauline who it turns out works for Balenciaga in ecommerce. She said, "I only wear Converse on Sundays". Since she works for Balenciaga that makes sense but I think she is the exception rather than the rule.

Even with the apparent dressing down of Paris, I will show you a few effortlessly stylish Parisians in my next post.

Going toward the Light
I got out my passport for my upcoming Paris trip and found all of my old ones. Funny ... I am twelve in the black & white photo. So excited to be going to Europe for the first time. I went to Switzerland with my parents: Zurich, Geneva, Chamonix (I know, France). The second passport I got in anticipation of a trip to Europe after college graduation. That trip was postponed until my sister graduated and we traveled to Florence for a month-long Itaglio print making class. After the class, we then toured northern Italy for several weeks. I want to share all my trips to the Continent with you, but there isn't enough time now! Suffice to say I LOVE Europe and feel visiting it is essential to style. I can't wait to go back to the City of Light.

Frog Feet

When it comes to style, I am all about beauty, but sometimes you need a good laugh. About a month ago I stepped into a shop on Presidio Avenue and tried on a pair of these funny looking shoes by Vibram called Five Fingers. They were so comfortable and intriguing that I put my name on a waiting list for the walking ones. There is also running model that is quite popular.

If you were a kid that liked to be barefoot all summer long like I did, then I suggest you try them out, at the very least they make great slippers if you have hardwood floors. I have been breaking them in with the idea that I might take them to Paris in May. I have one friend who will absolutely die when she hears this but if I can be comfortable and laugh, how good is that?

The cult French designer, Isabel Marant has had her own collection since 1995. With two stores in Paris, next month she opens the first US store in New York's Soho. Coincidentally or not her Parisian cool attitude has an American 50's spin for fall.

Marant's secondary line Étoile - French for 'star' - has all the bohemian cool of her namesake line, with kinder, gentler prices. Available in San Francisco at Metier and newly so at Barneys.

Dinner at Black Fleece

In my last post I mentioned the Black Fleece opening on Fillmore Street. Last night, a lively crowd welcomed the designer Thom Browne and honored Jennifer Siebel Newsom and her documentary at a lovely dinner in the Black Fleece store.

One of the things Thom is known for is his red, white and blue grosgrain ribbon detail in his designs so I marched into the affair in a red dress to keep in the spirit.

Thom, clad in his signature gray suit was very happy to be in San Francisco. Next season, he tells me he will do women's for the first time in his signature collection.

Jennifer Siebel Newsom wore Black Fleece and made it her own with a spunky beret.

Mayor Gavin Newsom explained the finer details of San Francisco zoning to Thom and Mr. del Vecchio, president of Brooks Brothers.

Jason Lewis of Sex & the City attended. Almost every woman and man vied for a photograph with him (Marissa Mayer, Hilary Newsom Callan & Lori Puccinelli).

Including Geoff Callan in a very buoyant Black Fleece ensemble.

Thom Browne

I met Thom Browne years ago through mutual friends. At the time, he was making beautiful bespoke suits and had just started to do ready-to-wear, mainly at Bergdorf Goodman. As Cecil Beaton stated, "people of style know that abstract good taste counts for nothing, the real task is always to express their own personalities. Their personal tastes are more important than common chic, and they have always gone against the current in order to arrive at something intensely individual." Thom's essence is such.

Every time I went to New York over the years, I would visit him in his "shop" in the meatpacking district. Not many people in San Francisco knew him back then, even though he was already selling in Japan and Europe including the hippest boutique in Paris ... Colette.

Thom's influence is vast. After the folly of 'casual Fridays', he brought the suit back to a younger generation of 30 and 40 year olds. Thom has been a driving force for a whole new interest in menswear. He won the the CFDA Menswear Designer of the Year in 2006, his work has been included in The Cooper-Hewitt's 2006 National Design Triennial and he has received many other accolades. Thom also designs the exciting Moncler Gamme Bleu line along with his namesake collection.

This week in San Francisco, Black Fleece, a joint venture between Thom and Brooks Brothers, opens its doors on Fillmore Street. San Francisco is lucky to have the first Black Fleece store outside of Manhattan.

Highlights from NY Fashion Week Fall 2010

Fashion Week as we know it, will morph interestingly in the near future with so many elements changing. The shows will be in Lincoln Center next September, economic pressures will continue, there will be more live streaming on the internet and an added prominence of style-hungry bloggers. Additionally, by banishing celebrities from his front row, Marc Jacobs has pointedly returned the focus of fashion to the clothes.

One of the highlights for me was sitting next to legend Suzy Menkes, Fashion Editor of the International Herald Tribune. She has been covering fashion shows for 44 years and can really make or break a designer. I told her I had lived in Manhattan and now lived in San Francisco. She thought I had made a wise move as she is quite enchanted with SF. She covers San Francisco's Academy of Art's show in NYC which is quite a coup for AAU. The show is really well done and has more latitude to be creative than the shows of established designers.

Zac Posen is obviously a very talented designer. The workmanship in each piece is extraordinary, although the ability of his designs to fit and flatter isn't always there. A special treat that opened his show and played throughout was Miri Ben-Ari, known as the HIP HOP violinist. Sublime along with Zac's red velvet.

Carolina Herrera puts on a beautiful perfectly executed show every season. Many shows are sort of tag teamed by Vogue with a couple of editors attending. For Mrs. Herrera, they all show: Anna Wintour to the left of the model, Virginia Smith to the right, then Hamish Bowles, then Grace Coddington, Tonne Goodman and Sally Singer. Hard to see but hopefully you can see Anna's bob and Grace's red tresses.

Thom Browne is a favorite. There is always something otherworldly or wacky about his shows. This time we entered the grand old Park Avenue Armory and wondered with great anticipation what was next, all the while listening to Mozart. To me, Thom takes classic sartorial elements- argyle, stripes, checks, tweeds- and turns them upside down to great effect. Black Fleece, a collection Thom Browne designs for Brooks Brothers, is opening a store in San Francisco soon. Will keep you posted.

Jason Wu presented a capsule collection for TSE that was perfection. It is hard to imagine that someone who looks like a child can design such subtly sophisticated clothes. Modern, fresh, wearable and fantastic.

Ever since I started my styling business it has been about New York fashion where I lived for many years and San Francisco fashion where I now live. Thus I got the idea for this video of Marcy and her New York self. Just having some fun which is what fashion should be about. As the Marcy(s) say, New York Fashion Week Fall 2010 marks the last time the shows will be held in Bryant Park. In September, Spring 2011 shows will be held at Lincoln Center. Although many designers over the years have opted to do their shows outside of the large venue.

What I learned from Marcy

This is a tribute to my fabulous clients who are strong, intelligent, interesting, fun women and all have their own unique style that I am fortunate enough to channel. One client in particular suggested I put my tips on my blog. I said, "I can't even think of what they are because they are just a part of me". The next day I found, "What I learned from Marcy" in my inbox.

The following are not tips for spring; rather I used the Spring Collections 2010 to illustrate some of my eternal dictums because I thought it would be interesting and because spring is being shipped to stores now. We all know that many of the runway looks are rarely worn by real women but they serve to exaggerate my points and expand your imagination.

1. Having only one bold accessory, in this case the lip, is very modern and chic. Sunglasses are not an accessory in California but a necessity!

2. Navy & black go together.

3. Don't buy the label, buy what looks good on you, period. That said, there are some labels that should not be worn.

4. Take proportion into consideration. The voluminous and sheer (nipples were a runway trend) top is balanced by a rather narrow skirt.

5. Brown & black together is eternally chic.

6. Keep it simple so the emphasis is on YOU. Don't wear rings, bracelets, necklaces and earrings all at the same time. It is not modern.

7. Keep it comfortable or you won't reach for it in the closet.

Babycakes

Although Babycakes is not fashion per se, there are a lot of similarities between food and fashion. They are both fast-paced, constantly changing and they bring instant gratification. I AM SO EXCITED that Babycakes of NYC has made it to the West Coast, opening this week in LA.

I found out that I could not eat gluten 14 years ago and there went all the cakes, cookies, bread and pasta from my life. While not everyone is intolerant like I am, more and more people are finding they feel healthier without eating gluten, the protein in flour, rye and barley. A Must Have

Because I don’t wear much make-up, I rely on the professionals for their advice. In the San Francisco stores I frequent, I have certain favorites: At Saks, it is Alexis Simonson at Armani. At Neimans, it is Rocky and Corinna at the Chanel counter. My new discovery is Miguel Ramon at Barneys. He did a smokey eye on me for a 1930's party that I absolutely adored. Miguel says that the trick to the smokey eye look is a ‘must have’ kohl liner from Serge Lutens Cosmetics. He says, interestingly, "the black is such a beautiful black". Sold at Barneys for $75, it's expensive but will last two years.

Serge Lutens is a French photographer, filmmaker, art director as well as a perfume and cosmetics designer. He is most well-known for his art direction and photography for Shiseido in the 1980’s.

Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen's designer line, The Row, has beautiful basics for a pretty penny. Most of it I can't see paying the price, but there are some key pieces that are absolutely fabulous. One is the the above motorcycle pant or leather legging, which unlike the average legging flatters almost everyone - and it is so comfortable.

Barneys may not look like they are doing well but The Row Motorcycle Pant is flying out the door at $1,700.

The Allure of Chanel

When I asked a friend if she had heard of the book, The Allure of Chanel, she said, "these books are all the same...there is a limited amount of material and I think that they are paid for by the Chanel Inc. Essentially, Coco Chanel was chic, she invented style, her perfumes are great, and she was a Nazi collaborator. End of story." This somewhat reductionist summary of her life is in many ways contradicted by this book, a little gem written by diplomat, writer and friend of Proust, Paul Morand . As Morand states, he was only the collaborator on the book: "nothing was written by me; it was all a ghost, but a ghost who, from beyond the grave, kept up a frantic gallop, her normal pace." Chanel invited Morand to St. Moritz after the Second World War with the intention that he write her memoirs, notes were taken of their conversations but never published until after her death in 1971. I have never read about a more volatile, contradictory, opinionated and brilliantly insufferable woman. This book is not for the coffee table, but a lovely little holiday gift for the "Chanelophile" in your life.

East meets West

Chanel executives are in San Francisco (not necessarily on surf boards but I love the imagery) to celebrate the re-opening of the Chanel boutique. Renowned architect, Peter Marino, has designed what is now one of the most beautiful Chanel boutiques in the world, open to the public tomorrow. Tonight is a private showing of the Cruise collection 2010 that was first shown on the boardwalk at the Lido Beach Club in Venice. One of my favorite shows, the romance evoked was extraordinary. Looking forward to the reinterpretation in San Francisco.

James de Givenchy

I think jewels are romance and James de Givenchy knows the secret. He is an incredibly talented, inventive designer as well as a consummate professional and an absolute delight.

A visit to Taffin, his salon above Fifth Avenue in New York City, is a treat that you should not deprive yourself of. James works by appointment only. He has an extensive private clientele and I didn’t hear it from him but he has quite a few illustrious clients. After passing through the Taffin doors, you enter another world full of bold, playful and colorful pieces, the ultimate playground for those who love beauty and original adornment.

I found the most unique and incredible pair of peridot and brown pear-shaped diamond earrings that were set in titanium (31 carats and 29 carats respectfully). Out-of-the-ordinary large cocktail rings include a Paraiba tourmaline set in white coral with a number of smaller peridots dotting the coral. A fantastical 48 carat rubelite pendant is set with eight diamond rondelles and strung on a rope. These and many others will only be seen in one place in the world and experienced by visiting with James de Givenchy.

Babe Paley/Style Icon

Their personal tastes are more important than common chic, and they have always gone against the current in order to arrive at something intensely individual.

One of the twentieth century's stand-out style icons, Babe Paley epitomized New York jet-set cool in the 50's and 60's. Her personal unconventional style was and still is enormously influential. Much to her husband's chagrin, Mrs. Paley would do things like mix extravagant jewelry with cheap costume pieces. She was beautiful though not classically so and absolutely oozed style.

'Coco Before Chanel'

The photo above hints at the very last scene in the movie by Anne Fontaine which focuses on Chanel's youth. Audrey Tatou gives an outstanding performance which lends the film an intelligence, restraint and style that is hard to do with so many movies, books and the sheer commercial power of Chanel over the years.

When Chanel first leaves home and is exposed to the fashions of the fashionable she is horrified. One woman's jewelry is so ghastly that she tells her she is wearing a carnival on her chest. Chanel makes dresses out of her lover's clothes and couldn't care in the least that she looks very different from the society folk. Innovators don't follow the crowd.

Thanks to Saks and SFLuxe, I was delighted to have total freedom in putting together looks to present fall trends at Saks "Want It" fashion show. The way I styled the show was to mix high-end designers with more affordable pieces. I like the edgy elegance of putting together ripped jeans with an exquisitely tailored Prada coat. The Nanette Lapore sequined dress with leggings is so 80's but throw the more classically inspired Chloe coat over and it is right now. I used an Azzedine Alaia top in the look above and exclaimed that "I love Alaia because he doesn't follow trends. He is a trend". Which sums up my belief that while industry uses trends to drive business, people with real style don't follow trends.

I got back from NY Fashion Week, Spring 2010 the week before last but had to mull over my excitement before writing anything. All the designers seem to be going through the paces but many don't have a real direction or know what they are doing. We are at a big turning point. It is a scary but exciting time. It is said that out of confusion comes creativity.

New York Fashion Week, Fall 09

No doom and gloom for New York Fashion Week even given the Wall St. proximity.

Some shows were in smaller venues but the mood was generally buoyant. Nobody was playing it safe with their collections. Things were still fun and playful. A major trend for fall is metallic, both gold and silver. Even though we may not be as flush as we used to, we can still feel rich by wearing metallics.

Carolina Herrera did her usual pretty ladylike collection. Rodarte is always a sought after show and didn't disappoint. So creative - and the boots! They were so high I don't know how the models got them on. Derek Lam was a very modern take on classical sportswear (love the gold houndstooth skirt). Behnaz Sarafpour had her best show in a couple of seasons that made you think of Hitchcock heroines. It turns out that Behnaz's husband is a huge fan of Jennifer from her role on NBC's "Life". Mr. de la Renta showed on the Upper East Side to the Park Avenue ladies who are his clients. J. Mendel always a favorite - glamorous, modern and feminine - was a little hard edged this season. Then we had musicians, Justin Timberlake and Ben Harper (with David Arquette) designing William Rast and Propr respectively - truly Renaissance men. Laura Dern and Courteney Cox were decidedly un-Hollywood at their husbands' show. Down to earth and refreshing.

At Wednesday night’s private cocktail party at Cartier, which raised awareness for Jennifer Siebel Newsom’s important new film project, “Women and Power,” (we’ll provide full coverage of that exciting event shortly, with photos by Drew Altizer) SFLuxe.com’s Damion Matthews was so engaged in what San Francisco’s First Lady had to say during her presentation about her experience in making the film that it wasn’t until the end of the event, when he had a moment to speak with her, that he noticed how absolutely chic her dress was. Surely she was wearing a major designer piece — a Balenciaga , Gucci or YSL?

Pressed for detail, Jennifer’s stylist, Marcy Carmack, laughed — it was actually a dress she pulled from the back of the closet, without a major name attached to it at all! The perfect dress for an occasion could come from any store or any designer based anywhere in the world, but in this case, it was just hanging in the closet waiting to be re-discovered! (The neckline really draws attention to the gorgeous Cartier earrings.) And for that, we declare that Jenifer Siebel Newsom has the look of the day!

New York Fashion Week intrigue

The Hèrve Lèger collection designed by Max Azria was to die for and the bathing suits . . . BEYOND sexy. You have to have a rockin body like attendee, Anna Kournikova to best pull one of those off.

FashionWeek. If you watched it, you know she kept talking about
branding herself. The next day I saw her at my favorite fashion show,
J. Mendel. Well it wasn’t a runway show but a presentation of the
collection on posed models and the guests mingled around like a party.
Anyway it was interesting to see Rachel because she cultivates a
larger than life persona … big hair, big sunglasses, the largest
Cartier Panthère ring and she is all of 5’1”. As part of her
branding, I think she should design a collection for petite women.
She would “Kill It”.
